The West is trying to drag Moscow into war, says Russian Foreign Minister

The West is trying to incite an inevitable confrontation with Russia over Ukraine, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Monday.
Speaking to his Syrian counterpart, Faisal Mekdad, Lavrov lamented that Russia was unable to focus its efforts on its relations with the Middle Eastern country, blaming Western attempts to fan the flames of conflict in Ukraine, allegedly in the purpose of encouraging war between Russia and NATO.
“The situation in the world is changing rapidly. This also applies to North Africa and the Middle East, including Syria,” said Lavrov. “Unfortunately, our efforts with you… are affected by the atmosphere that is currently intensifying among our Western colleagues.”
According to Lavrov, the “Western Alliance” try to create a “Almost insurmountable confrontation” with Russia.
According to the Foreign Minister, Moscow wants to focus its efforts on finding a ceasefire and a political settlement in Syria.
The Russian presence in the country, at the invitation of President Bashar Assad, has been permanent since 2015 and aims to help Damascus fight against extremist Islamist terrorism.
The minister also pointed out that NATO’s attempts to smear Russia’s reputation due to its presence in Syria would be futile.
“We certainly will not allow such attempts to undermine our ability to achieve concrete results,” he noted, emphasizing that Russia would work to strengthen Syria “sovereignty, territorial integrity and political independence”.
In response, Mekdad revealed Syria’s support and gratitude for Russia’s efforts and echoed Lavrov’s attack on NATO.
“The West’s campaign of hypocrisy, lies and deceit is the same as the campaign it has launched against Syria,” Mekdad said.
Lavrov is due to meet US Secretary of State Antony Blinken in Europe on Thursday to discuss options for easing rising tensions around Ukraine. Many NATO members, including the United States, have claimed that Russia is preparing for an imminent invasion of its neighbor. The Kremlin denied this.
